January 20th News

Information and Announcements
  • Monday, Jan. 23 and Thursday, Jan. 24: FAST reading testing
Friday, Jan. 27  Mission Awareness Day

Religion:

This week students have learned about what happened to the Israelites after they left Egypt. Life was not as easy for them as one would think. They will have a 10 point fill in the blank quiz next Wednesday over this information. A word bank is provided. The quiz will focus on the key terms and locations studied in the chapter. Also next Wednesday, Christopher Grow, a SFA parishioner and current seminarian will be visiting with the students about vocations, prayer and the priesthood.

On Thursday we will begin Chapter 12.  Chapter 12 is a study of the Ten Commandments and how they apply to our lives today.

Social Studies:

This week students finished their study of Chinese history and how the different emperors selected their government officials. Please look for the test to come home next week after everyone has taken it. Next week, we will begin our study of the Chinese Discoveries and Inventions.

Reading:

On Friday, we finished the week with a test over chapters 1-6 in Boy the the Striped Pajamas. Those will come home on Monday for a signature. The students really seem to be enjoying the book. Vocab quizzes will continue on Fridays.

Next week we will be doing the winter FAST testing. This is a two-part process. Part one is the on-line comprehension exam. Part two is the read-aloud fluency portion. I will compile the results, and share those with you at conferences. It is always good to see the progress made from fall into winter on these two areas.

Language Arts:

Students finished their final drafts of the Holocaust research papers. Those rubrics will come home today; please sign them for their return on Monday. This project was a tough one, with research, locating and citing sources, outlines, and finally a 5 paragraph paper complete with a Works Cited page. I am very impressed and proud of the work the students produced!

The next step is to present their research findings. Students had two class periods this week to get a good start on their projects. Those begin on Tuesday, with 5 speakers presenting in each class. Ask your student to practice their presentation for you - they already look very informative.

We closed the week by watching a Holocaust survivor documentary. Consider asking your student what they thought of Gerda Weissmann's story, and about what they have learned about the Holocaust so far.

Math Period 1:
The students completed a quiz on Friday, these will come home on Monday for you to review and sign.  Next week we will be practicing using the distributive property, factoring algebraic expressions, and simplifying.  The unit test will be the week of January 30th, but due to Catholic Schools Week activities, it will be difficult to know the exact date until a couple days beforehand.

Math Period 4:
The students practiced solving one step addition and subtraction equations this week.  Next week we will do multiplication and division equations.  The students will apply these skills to solving word problems, as well.  The unit test will be the week of January 30th, however, due to Catholic Schools Week activities, it will be difficult to know the exact date until a couple of days beforehand.

Math Period 5:

The students completed a quiz on Friday, look for these to come home on Monday for you to review and sign.  Next week we will be practicing using the distributive property, factoring algebraic expressions, and simplifying.  The unit test will be the week of January 30th, but due to Catholic Schools Week activities, it will be difficult to know the exact date until a couple days beforehand.

Science:

The students developed the understanding of the three stresses that act on rocks at different plate boundaries.  If the rocks break, a fault forms.  Your child should be able to connect the three types of boundaries, three types of forces, and three types of faults.  There will be a short quiz on Tuesday, to assess understanding of Chapter 2 section 1.  Next week we will talk about the focus, epicenter, and magnitude of earthquakes.
